Cyclic voltammetric studies of 1-(2-pyridylazo)-2-naphthol (PAN) in aqueous organic solvent viz., acetonitrile, methanol and dimethyl sulphoxide media was carried out. A parallel study on electrochemical reduction of PAN was studied at glassy carbon rotating disc electrode. Single reduction wave was observed due to the reduction of -N=N- moiety and in the reverse scan two oxidation peaks were observed at 0.38V and at 0.67 V due to the oxidation of –OH and –NH–NH– groups respectively. The effect of sweep rate, analyte concentration, acid concentration and solvent variation were evaluated. The data shows that the electrode process was diffusion controlled. The possible mechanism was proposed. Effect of different surfactants on the electroreduction behaviour of PAN was discussed. The reduction product by controlled potential electrolysis was isolated and characterized by spectral studies.
